BIO

Born in Liège and living in Brussels. She studied photography at the Institute of Fine Arts Saint-Luc in Liège. In 2015, she published her first book with Éditions du Caïd. In 2017, she staged her first solo exhibition at MAAC, Brussels. In 2021, she staged a duo with Daphne Agten, “Muscle memory,” as part of the FRINGE festival in Amsterdam.

Using the photographic device to blur boundaries, the Belgian artist gives voice to instincts to produce images in which each fold expresses an event, a meeting, an emulsion. She pursues an artistic practice that interweaves the different territories where she evolves as a professional photographer, integrated into the editorial world, into fashion, music videos, and in constant collaboration with stylists, dancers, musicians, and filmmakers. These multiple facets are melted and metamorphosed in her works, bearing witness to a fierce research, coupled with an ambitious quality of treatment, whatever the new media she explores. Her pieces reflect the exploratory dimension that animates the artist, without ever abandoning a style – albeit impure – and a pushed plastic research – all in formal cosmopolitanism. The portraits, like the landscapes, are invested with a new materiality, emphatic colors, making them somewhat mutant—horizons and characters of worlds that press at the margins of our own. Between the different territories of her profession and the artistic path that traverses them, mutual fertilizations thus appear, inscribing Laetitia Bica’s approach in a contemporaneity populated by cyclical references to the sacred, to decay, and to the sea: a swelling of forms in becoming, the matrix of life, organized chaos, and subversive elegance.

PUBLICATIONS

  • 2015 FIRST Éditions du Caïd This first monograph compiles several years of visual and artistic research, from portraits to fashion photography, as well as more personal works. Including numerous unpublished images, FIRST explores themes dear to the artist, such as concealment, mimicry, travel, identity, and music. Offering a thematic reading of the images—rather than a chronological one—the monograph is organized around these various themes without becoming an institutional exercise. The book is accompanied by a text on transgression and laughter by Jeffrey Tallane.
